Day ·2 - The day the adventure really started in Costa Rica!

We had an incredible day in Costa Rica. The day was totally packed. Beginning with a breakfast and an early start, we headed through the mountainous region in central Costa Rica.

After viewing the 2nd largest National Park, the rainforest and the river, we headed to an afternoon with the sloths. At the sloth rehabilitation center, Aviarios del Carabe, we were introduced to multiple sloths, including Buttercup. who posed for a few pictures with each of us.

Then, a dugout canoe ride through the jungle reserve yielded views of exotic birds, fish, iguanas and more sloths! Following the bus ride back to our new accomodations near Limon, we experienced the Caribbean Sea in all its glory. Our hotel neighbors the Caribbean and offered the chance for a little afternoon downtime.

The highlight of the day for many of the students was in the evening. At sunset, students were able to release seven (7) Leatherback turtle babies into the Caribbean. These turtles were less than eight hours old! The students were able to help nest and encourage the turtles to adapt to their new home.

Finally a presentation about sea turtles, a fabolous dinner and off to bed before another early wake-up call tomorrow!

Enjoy a few pictures. Many of the students have blogged their experiences, pictures and thoughts and they will be uploaded tomorrow. Pura Vida!
